Goodman IIIThe Island is a spiritual drama which could have come from no country other than Russia; it was released in 2006. Anatoly, a young sailor in the Russian northern fleet in World War II, kills his commander at the behest of German officer to save his own life; he spends the rest of his life in a monastery, praying for his young commander's soul and begging the Lord for forgiveness. Soon, though, we see that Anatoly is a wonderworker, that God has chosen to do great things through him; yet he is a murderer, and doesn't understand why he should be so favored. Anatoly purges his guilt and gives a great lesson of guilt, penance, forgiveness, and the all-knowing Providence of God.http://gorpub.freeshell.org/island.html2024-03-11T00:00:00-00:002024-03-11T00:00:00-00:00New original poem: Ashen VisageDonald P. Goodman IIIWith an interesting use of alliterative on several lines, this dozzet explores the symbolism of color, and relates it to fasting in general (and Lenten sacrifice, which began yesterday this year) and the need to empty oneself to fill oneself with something holier and better.http://gorettipub.org/ashen.html2024-02-15T00:00:00-00:002024-02-15T00:00:00-00:00New original poem: Tears and StainsDonald P. Goodman IIIWe examine how a tear in a cloth can always be fixed, while a stain can never be completely wiped away. This is intended to be a metaphor for damage to the body as opposed to damage to the soul, hence the terminal line that nothing "known to man" can cleanse the stain.http://gorettipub.org/cloth.html2024-02-12T00:00:00-00:002024-02-12T00:00:00-00:00The Dozzet: A Poetical FormDonald P. Goodman IIIA description of the “dozzet”, a poetical form of my own invention somewhat similar to a sonnet. It consists of twelve lines of iambic hexameter with various rhyme schemes This article describes the nature of the iambic foot and the various rhyme schemes that the dozzet can use, with examples. Since many of our poems are dozzets, this explanation is long overdue.http://gorettipub.org/dozzet.html2024-02-06T00:00:00-00:002024-02-06T00:00:00-00:00New original poem: The BumblebeeDonald P. Goodman IIIThis is a rather light-hearted exploration of a (somewhat fictionalized) event from my daughter's childhood, when a bee got tangled in her hair. She has some sensory issues and was unable to handle the rush of stimulus caused by this, and so for her there was nothing in the world other than this terrifying bumblebee in her hair; for the bee, of course, there was nothing in the world but this huge creature that it had stung and, by so stinging, it had guaranteed its own death. So I explore how, despite both creatures having what can only be described as a living nightmare, the world is still big and good and beautiful. A comment on divine providence. The juxtaposition of a light-hearted approach to a childhood incident with the comments on monstrosities and death serves, I hope, good purpose in the work.http://gorettipub.org/louise.html2024-02-02T00:00:00-00:002024-02-02T00:00:00-00:00Updated Poem Index with Random ButtonDonald P. StewartDonald P. Goodman IIIGeorge R. Stewart's Earth Abides is a post-apocalyptic novel written in 1165 (1949), detailing the development of a small community in the San Francisco Bay Area surrounding graduate student Isherwood Williams (“Ish”). Mostly ignoring the facts of the apocalypse itself (a great plague), the novel centers on the following decades, the birth of the community, its growth, and finally its maturity as Ish lays dying. Its agnosticism is thoroughgoing, so it can only be recommended for its limited virtues, but it is (mostly) clean, lacks profanity, and provides some interesting examples of virtue that can make it worth reading.http://gorpub.freeshell.org/earth_abides.html2024-01-26T00:00:00-00:002024-01-26T00:00:00-00:00New original poetry: The Road with No EndDonald P. Goodman IIIAn alliterative poem, in a rather stricter style than the others published here. Chesterton famously remarked that the ouroboros (a snake eating its own tail) was an excellent image of paganism, a constant circling with no end; while the Cross is a fitting image of Christianity, spreading out forever, always larger, but with a clear destination in the center. We explore that concept here.http://gorettipub.org/circles.html2024-01-18T00:00:00-00:002024-01-18T00:00:00-00:00New film review: M. Night Shyamalan's SignsDonald P. Goodman IIIM. Night Syamalan, known primarily as a director of either taut thrillers or utter bombs, presents his fifth overall (and third major) film, Signs, in the vein of the thriller. Signs works pretty well as a thriller; however, it is rife with deep and profound symbolism on the deep and profound topic of Divine Providence; this review analyzes the film under that aspect.http://gorpub.freeshell.org/signs.html2024-01-15T00:00:00-00:002024-01-15T00:00:00-00:00New original story: The Battle of Tycho UnderDonald P. Goodman IIIWe join once again our favorite computerman, John Riche, this time still a mere apprentice. Taking part in the first major space battle in twenty years, this story packs tension, action, and physically-accurate space combat tactics. The sci-fi fans out there should really enjoy this one.http://gorpub.freeshell.org/battle_tycho.html2024-01-07T00:00:00-00:002024-01-07T00:00:00-00:00New original poetry: Lead Us to the EastDonald P. Goodman IIIOriginally conceived as a paean to prayer in the direction of liturgical east, this poem contemplates the importance of proceeding always towards Christ and not looking back, using the traditional symbolism of east and west.http://gorettipub.org/o_father.html2024-01-03T00:00:00-00:002024-01-03T00:00:00-00:00
